that came from the factory with an HEI system and you have the brilliant idea engine swap an engine that originally did not have an HEI set-up but you plan to install one onto the motor. DO NOT DO IT! The wiring is hell. Over the course of seven year GM changed nearly all important wire colors and there are no guides on how to do what I am doing. 1981 has a very different wiring harness compared to 1980 and earlier and I can't find an accurate wiring diagram for the car - I'm using a 1979 diagram.

Jerk ;) Any chance you know what the stock ignition wire color is?

Back to the stock type ignition system and then over to MSD. They know early ignitions.

That reminds me of the bad old days of IT networking, where it wasn't too uncommon to find a cabinet like this:
It was invariably quicker to pull it all out and start from scratch.

And I thought deciphering the wiring loom on my motorboat was hard... (10 colors, didn't match manual).
Good luck, you can do it!

No clue.

Oh man, I'm sorry the diagrams I linked were wrong. I never would have thought that they would change the colors like that. The hash of splices and general spaghetti that was a 40 year old harness is why I rewired my Camaro from scratch, but that is not the cheap or easy way to go. I feel for you.

It's okay? You linked a diagram?

I did yesterday. It was here http://forums.carcraft.com/70/8106463/gen… though you have to scroll a bit to get there.

Oh, no, those links were quite nifty. They solved half of the problem and the other half I am solving using guess work.

I think whats screwing you is that someone removed the CCC box that GM tossed on their cars in 80 and 81.
All you have to do is run a new 12v wire from any key-on power source at the fuse block to the coil.

I don't actually know what that is. The PO installed an HEI dist. on the Chevy 350 they threw into the car. I am trying to work with the stuff she did, but a lot of the stuff she did on the car was poorly done and I have to keep fixing her mistakes.

CCC was a primitive spark advance computer from the dark ages of ECMs.
Pretty much everyone that removed one hacked the crap out of the harness.
There should be an IGN or IGN-1 slot in your fuse box.
The hard part is identifying the wire behind the box. You can tap that fuse and you have key on power for the HEI.
If you're not putting A/C or Cruise back in you could also tap off of those.

Thanks! Yeah... my car doesn't have any computers anymore. I would love to restore my cruise control, but all the hardware that isn't on the steering column is missing.

No problem. I've been in that spot 3 times before. Once in an AMC Eagle with a GM/Ford hybrid ignition system.
There is a "redneck" fix as well.
You can run a wire straight from the battery or horn relay to a dash mounted switch then through an inline fuse and up to the distributor.
